Prenatal Care
Becoming a mother is one of the
greatest blessings for a woman. I clearly remember the day when I got to know
that I was pregnant. I was really excited but at the same time was very
anxious too ! Everything was new for me and I had advice pouring in from everyone.
I thoroughly enjoyed my pregnancy
and also did exactly what my doctor advised me to do. She was very kind and
explained in detail about prenatal care. Prenatal care is a preventive health
care.Its goal is to provide
regular check-ups that allow doctors to treat and prevent potential health
problems throughout the course of the pregnancy and to promote healthy
lifestyles that benefit both mother and child.
For
expecting mothers, prenatal care reduces the chances of serious problems like
preterm birth, anemia and low birth weight.
Also,
a pregnant woman should make sure that her immunizations are up to date.
Vaccination against some diseases during pregnancy can help protect both the
baby and the mother from vaccine-preventable diseases. During pregnancy,
vaccinated mothers can help pass on the antibodies to their babies. Antibodies
provide some immunity against certain diseases during their first few months of
life, when your baby is still too young to get vaccinated.
One
of the most important vaccinations which I got during my pregnancy was the 3 in
1 vaccination which can help protect against 3 diseases Tetanus, Diphtheria and
Pertussis.
Tetanus
is a nerve disease. Diphtheria is a throat infection that can block airways.
Pertussis
is a serious respiratory disease that can lead to hospitalization in infants
less than 2 months of age.
Pertussis
(also known as whooping cough) is a highly contagious respiratory infection
which can be very serious, especially for newborn babies. The most common symptoms
an infant is likely to present are cough with or without associated whoop,
difficulty in breathing and other symptoms which may be difficult to diagnose.
Infants are not adequately protected especially against Pertussis at birth.
Pertussis vaccination begins only at 6-8 weeks of age, putting them at risk of
Pertussis disease and complications at birth or in the first few months of life.
Vaccination during pregnancy helps pass on protection from the mother to the
newborn baby against Pertussis.
Pregnancy
is a very delicate and beautiful period of a woman’s life. Take proper care of
yourself, go for regular doctor check-ups, pamper yourself, indulge into all
your food cravings and most importantly stay happy.
